New Vistas is unique in every way, in honor and respect for our individual students who all learn in their own special way.
Last night’s Back to School Family Fun Picnic was an excellent example of NVS’s uniqueness. This was not the typical “spend 5 minutes in each of your child’s classes” event. Instead, students and faculty prepared together all afternoon for the gathering, like getting ready for a family celebration .
Students made two kinds of fresh salsa plus chocolate chip cookies. All the tables and chairs had to be moved from inside out, with tablecloths, candles, and flowers. They did that work, too.
We had an excellent turnout—one of our Founding Mothers, Libby Jarrett joined us, plus most of our students and their families, half of our Board, and 100% of the hard-working, talented faculty and staff.
John Wynne provided a superb barbecue supper, complete with fried chicken, green beans, pickle salad, and delicious fresh potatoes.
Local popular band FireCracker Jam played. They were amazing.
What was the focus? Getting to know one another and to experience, first-hand, the NVS community spirit. It was a wonderful evening, exemplary of the New Vistas character and mission. Watching the young people serve and play made me proud of what we do here every single day.
